Quick Answer

Each Fed holiday from October 12, 2026 to January 1, 2027 delays merchant card funding one business day. A batch closed after cutoff on Wednesday, November 25 funds no earlier than Friday, November 27.

Think of mail dropped after the last pickup. It leaves with the next truck. Card batches behave the same way, and the cutoff that counts is your deposit bank's, set the business day before each closure.

Key Points

  • The Federal Reserve Board's K.8 schedule lists five closures from Columbus Day on October 12 through New Year's Day on January 1, 2027.
  • Farmers State Bank's 2026 schedule sets a 2:00 PM deadline on Wednesday, November 25, with Friday, November 27 as the earliest Thanksgiving week funding date.
  • Farmers State Bank does no ACH or wire processing on Christmas Eve, so nothing takes effect from Thursday, December 24 until Monday, December 28.
Three things card sellers believe. Myth or fact?
Call each one, then see how other readers called it.
1 Same-day ACH means a holiday card batch still funds that day.
2 Round-the-clock instant settlement is already standard for US card funding.
3 The Fed publishes its holiday closures years in advance.

Holiday closures decide when a card batch actually funds.

Most answers to how long a credit card payment takes are written for cardholders watching a charge post. Merchants need the other side. When does the money land? That side runs on a bank calendar, and the ACH network that carries card funding to your account stops on weekends and holidays. This piece walks through each Q4 2026 closure, the bank deadline that comes before it, and the Thanksgiving Wednesday that matters most for late batches. I start with why this quarter is so crowded.

Card revenue moves only on banking days. Which closure costs you most depends on where it falls in the week, a gap faster settlement cannot close, and the research section below walks through each one. A 2019 Federal Register notice described same-day ACH windows with submission deadlines as early as 10:30 a.m. ET, settling at 1:00 p.m. ET. Those windows run on business days only. The calendar decides when holiday card sales reach your account.

Why do bank holidays matter more for card sellers this quarter?

Card revenue only becomes cash at settlement, and settlement stops whenever the Federal Reserve closes. Q4 2026 packs four of those closures in before New Year's Day.

  • Mark each closure date on your cash calendar.
  • Close batches on the business day before each one.
  • Hold extra cash for any weekend that touches a holiday.

The Federal Reserve Board's K.8 schedule, last updated July 8, 2026, lists Columbus Day (October 12), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day (November 26) and Christmas Day (December 25), with New Year's Day following on January 1, 2027. These dates are fixed. They will not move.

The common assumption is that an approved card sale is money in the bank. It is not. Approval only authorizes the charge. The money moves at settlement, and the Federal Reserve System observes 11 holidays each year on which that settlement does not run, so any sale caught behind one waits for the next open day.

Across 3 sources, one pattern holds. The calendar decides when sales turn into usable cash. That is why choosing merchant payment processing solutions with a clear funding schedule comes before the first holiday, not after it.

How many days does each bank holiday really cost a card seller?

On the Federal Reserve's calendar, Christmas week this year loses a single business day. On one bank's ACH schedule, nothing takes effect from Thursday, December 24 until Monday, December 28.

The Fed's calendar sets the floor. Its official schedule, last updated July 8, 2026, lists five closures from Columbus Day on October 12 through New Year's Day on January 1, 2027, and the Reserve Banks' operations page matches it. None is a weekend holiday shifted to a Friday or Monday, so on each date settlement simply stops. Columbus Day has passed. Four remain.

Card money meets that calendar at the end of a chain. Approved sales go to the processor in batches, often at the end of the business day, and the merchant is paid at settlement, a step a YouTube payments explainer says "can sometimes take days" around weekends and holidays. ACH funds settle only "when the country's central bank is open," First Citizens Bank explains, so holiday payments are "usually delayed one business day."

Weekends stretch the pause. When Martin Luther King Jr. Day fell on Monday, January 19 this year, the Fed's ACH service stopped at 3 a.m. ET on Saturday, January 17 and resumed at 5:30 p.m. ET on the holiday. Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, so its closure runs straight into a weekend.

The Fed sets which days are lost. A bank's schedule shows what else can be lost around them. Here is how Farmers State Bank's published 2026 ACH and wire deadlines line up with the Fed's fourth quarter.

Christmas Eve breaks the pattern. The Fed is open that Thursday, yet the bank does no ACH or wire processing, so its customers lose two business days in a row where the Fed calendar shows one. One bank's schedule cannot show what yours will do, but First Citizens says banks may close on days near a holiday, and some that open may be unable to send transfers to other banks.

"Others may stay open on certain holidays, but that doesn't mean it's business as usual."

First Citizens Bank, small business guidance on ACH payments and bank holidays, 2021

The second exception is the clock the day before. Black Friday is an ordinary Fed business day, but a file that misses the bank's 2:00 PM cutoff on Wednesday, November 25 runs into a closed Thursday. Under the bank's rule that files arrive one business day before the effective date, the next available effective date is the following Monday. Payroll platform OnPay warns that missing a cutoff "by even a few minutes" can push a payment to the next business day.

The bank's holiday table works one business day ahead, though its standard rules say credit files are "recommended two business days prior to the effective date." Same Day ACH can rescue a late file: the Fed approved a third same-day window in 2019, giving submission deadlines of 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. ET from March 19, 2021. Business banking provider Brex notes the catch: same-day ACH "has its own cutoff times, and missing them means your payment rolls to the next day anyway."

Every source agrees on the floor: each Fed closure costs at least one settlement day. Two things the Fed calendar never shows decide the rest: the cutoff the day before, and any closure a bank adds on its own. Those can turn a Friday deposit into a Monday one at Thanksgiving, and one lost day into two at Christmas. The evidence documents this for bank ACH schedules; how a card processor's funding cutoff lines up with them is something you have to ask.

  • Write the four remaining closures on your calendar next to your bank's deadline the day before. Farmers State Bank's are 2:00 PM on November 10, November 25 and December 23. Ask your own bank for its times.
  • Ask your bank whether it processes ACH on Christmas Eve, and whether it closes early or stops interbank transfers on any other day near a holiday.
  • Ask your processor, us included, what time its funding cutoff falls on Wednesday, November 25 and Wednesday, December 23, in which time zone, and whether a late batch can still settle the same day.
  • Until your bank confirms otherwise, plan Christmas week cash as if nothing lands between Wednesday, December 23 and Monday, December 28.
  • Ask your bank now for its New Year's Day 2027 deadline, because a 2026 schedule may not cover it.

How we checked this

We compared the Federal Reserve Board's official holiday schedule with the Reserve Banks' operations page, retrieved October 21, 2026, and with one bank's published 2026 ACH and wire deadlines. We also read a Federal Register notice on same-day ACH windows and explainers from a bank, a business banking provider, a payroll platform and a YouTube channel on card payments. None of the figures here are our own. Farmers State Bank's deadlines are one bank's examples, and the First Citizens guidance dates from 2021. The FedACH processing times we reviewed cover January 2026, not the fourth quarter. The same-day windows are as the Fed approved them in 2019. Brex and OnPay sell banking and payroll services, and we process card payments, so we have a stake in how sellers plan around funding. Still unknown: how each card processor's funding cutoff maps onto bank ACH deadlines, and which banks add closures of their own.

Which deadlines decide when holiday card sales actually fund?

For a business moving $25,000 or more a month, one missed pre-holiday deadline strands a full day of card revenue, and Christmas week can strand several.

We work with established businesses at that volume. For any of them, the friction starts at the deposit bank, which sets its own holiday deadlines a business day ahead of the funding date. Farmers State Bank's 2026 ACH and wire schedule shows the pattern clearly.

The research section above lays out each of these bank deadlines next to the Fed's closures.

Set your own card batch close by the earlier of two clocks: your processor's and your bank's. Your processor's batch cutoff sits upstream of the bank's, so it may come earlier still.

Payroll pulls the other way. In a 2023 Reddit thread on Thanksgiving pay, one worker said their employer locked time cards early, on Nov. 18, "because the holiday." Wages leave early. Card deposits land late. Businesses that also collect bank payments through Seamless ACH run into the same calendar, which is why the Monday holiday in October deserves the first look.

Holidays still pause settlement. SeamlessChex credit card processing helps businesses map batches and funding dates with confidence.

How should card sellers plan around each closure?

Treat each holiday as one lost settlement day, batch before the bank's deadline the day before, and size a cash buffer for the weekends touching Columbus Day and Christmas.

First Citizens Bank puts the rule plainly: ACH payments do not post on holidays and are "usually delayed one business day." The bank also notes that some institutions close on adjacent days, such as the Saturday before a Monday holiday. I read that as a warning to treat Columbus Day weekend as October's riskiest stretch.

Faster rails do not change the math. In 2019 the Federal Reserve Board approved a third same-day ACH window with a 4:45 p.m. ET submission deadline, and it took effect March 19, 2021. It shortens weekday waits. It cannot settle anything on a day the Fed is closed.

Contrary to the Thanksgiving freeze many sellers brace for, Black Friday is not a bank holiday, so funding resumes the morning after Thanksgiving. The real squeeze sits elsewhere. Monday closures and Christmas week join a weekend to a holiday, and those are the stretches where I would hold the most cash. If you also collect ACH payments online, move those files onto the same early schedule as your card batches.

What should card sellers expect after New Year's Day?

Expect the same pattern to repeat. Before January, ask your bank which of its own 2027 closures fall near the Fed's, and write them beside your batch cutoffs.

Size your cash buffer to your heaviest holiday week, not an average one. I think card sellers should treat every holiday week that way. Europe now requires instant transfers around the clock, all year. The US calendar has not followed. Set next year's batch cutoffs in December, while this quarter's near misses are still fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

What else do card sellers ask about holiday funding?

These answers cover how holiday dates shift each year, the 2026 ACH rule changes, fraud controls on instant payments, and how quickly an established business can start processing.

Do bank holiday dates move from year to year?

Yes. Northstar Bank's published 2025 schedule listed Columbus Day on October 13 and Thanksgiving on November 27, one day later than this year's dates. Pull the current Federal Reserve calendar every year.

Do the 2026 ACH rule changes affect card sellers?

They can if you also send ACH payments. Northstar Bank notes that in 2026 the company entry description must read "PAYROLL" for payroll payments and "PURCHASE" for e-commerce purchases. I would confirm both labels before the holiday rush.

Why does faster settlement raise fraud risk?

Instant settlement removes the window banks once used to stop suspicious transfers. Europe answers this with Verification of Payee, a step that confirms the recipient's account matches the intended name before a payment is final.
